FAQs:

How often will I be expected to volunteer?
This is up to you. We will ask on sign-up how often you would like to volunteer and will check-in every three months to see if anything has changed. We hope you will volunteer with us regularly, however, if you can only commit to a one-time event, we recommend signing up as a Fundraising Advocate.

How far will I have to travel?
You will be linked with the training academy closest to your home address and many of your events will involve the Academy Lead based there, however, we will ask you how far you are willing to travel and whether you have access to a car or will be using public transport.

Is there any training involved?
You will be expected to attend a volunteer induction when you start, where you will be trained by a member of the Building Heroes team. You will also receive a volunteer handbook with all the information necessary for you to succeed as a volunteer. We do recommend some online training if you are struggling with key skills such as communication or organising an event, however these are optional. If you think we should add something to our training, please feel free to suggest it to our team.

Who can volunteer?
Anyone over 18! You do not need military experience to volunteer with us*. We have lots of ways of volunteering and will surely find something you will enjoy. *Mentors will need a military background.

Will I need a DBS check?
We currently only ask for a DBS check from our Mentoring Advocates, as they will sometimes be based in a college environment with under 18s present. Our team will be able to assist you if you don’t already have one.

Who can I contact if I need support with my application?
If you have any trouble with your application, please feel free to email our volunteer team on volunteers@buildingheroes.org.uk.

How will I be supported while I volunteer?
Our volunteer team are always on hand if you need support while you volunteer with us. You will be provided with contact details for our Volunteer Lead as well as the Academy Lead for your closest centre. You will be given a volunteer handbook to guide you in your role and our team will contact you before and after an event, as well as during monthly check-ins.
