Stepping Behind the Hoarding: Learners Gain Real World Insight Through Lovell Site Visits

Over recent weeks, our learners have had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a series of site visits with Lovell, visiting developments at Basford, Drummond Park, and Benwell Dene.

Over recent weeks, our learners have had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a series of site visits with Lovell, visiting developments at Basford, Drummond Park, and Benwell Dene.

These visits form a key part of our growing partnership with Lovell, which has evolved from Gold Sponsorship into a shared Academy partnership alongside sister company Morgan Sindall Construction. Together, we continue to work across a number of our academies to support learners in exploring life on a live construction site and understanding the wide range of career opportunities available within the sector.

"Really enjoyed the site visit to Lovell, presentation was really informative. Definitely opened my eyes to the managerial side to it and the trades" - Daniel.

From Workshop to Worksite

For many learners, stepping behind the hoarding is a defining moment in their training journey. It brings to life the skills they have been developing in the workshop and places them in a real commercial setting.

During these visits, learners were able to explore different stages of housing development, from early groundworks through to structural and finishing phases. They gained valuable insight into both traditional masonry builds and modern timber frame construction, developing an understanding of the differences in build out times, sequencing, quality control, and site management considerations for each approach.

These practical comparisons help learners build a deeper appreciation of how construction projects are planned, managed, and delivered, and how different methods influence timelines, logistics, and workforce coordination.

Learning in All Weathers

Site visits at this time of year are not always glamorous. Chilly mornings, damp conditions, and muddy boots are very much part of the experience. However, these conditions are also an important reminder of the realities of working in construction and the resilience, professionalism, and teamwork the industry demands.

Despite the weather, our learners approached every visit with enthusiasm and curiosity. Being on site, seeing activity in progress, and speaking directly with experienced professionals provided an invaluable learning experience that simply cannot be replicated in the classroom.

"The team were friendly, informative, welcoming. They gave us a good understanding of what Lovell is and how it fits in with Morgan Sindal Group" - Michael.

Guided by Outstanding Site Teams

A particular highlight of these visits has been the generosity of the Lovell site management teams. Their knowledge, passion, and willingness to engage with learners made each visit both informative and inspiring.

Site management took time to explain processes, demonstrate best practice, and share insights into the “Lovell way” of working. They answered questions openly, offered practical advice, and gave learners a realistic and encouraging view of progression opportunities within the industry.

This level of engagement plays a crucial role in building confidence and helping learners visualise themselves in future site based roles.

'I laid the first brick and the guy was like that's pretty decent. The brief and the hands on stuff was really good to do with a corporate company" - James.

Supporting Successful Transitions

At Building Heroes, our mission is to support members of the Armed Forces community as they transition into successful civilian careers. Enrichment opportunities such as these site visits are central to that aim.

By connecting learners directly with industry professionals and live projects, we help them build networks, understand employer expectations, and develop a clearer sense of their potential next steps. These experiences strengthen employability, reinforce learning, and motivate learners as they move forwards.

"It was great, very professional. The hospitality was great, they didn't have control over the weather otherwise the practical would have been good. I felt welcomed" - Hanif.

Thank You, Lovell

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lovell for their continued time, energy, and commitment to supporting our learners. These visits represent a significant investment in future talent and demonstrate the strength of our partnership in action.
