Stephen Jackson spent 21 years as a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer (REME)
After serving 21 years as a Class 1 Vehicle Mechanic in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), Stephen faced medical discharge in 2024. Recognising the importance of planning for his transition, he completed the 18th Edition Household Electrical Course in early 2024 before enrolling in the Building Heroes Multi-Skills Construction Course at the Basingstoke Academy in June.
During his military career, Stephen developed extensive mechanical expertise, alongside coaching, mentoring, personnel management, problem-solving, and leadership skills. As a Section Commander, he was responsible for leading and managing a team of 12 personnel, overseeing their day-to-day tasks, training, professional development, and performance management. He also achieved a Level 4 Award from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) before leaving service.
Now working for Landmarc, Stephen plays a crucial role in the upkeep and maintenance of the Urban Training Centre (UTC) at Longmoor Training Camp. His responsibilities include carrying out essential construction and maintenance tasks such as plumbing, bricklaying, and general repairs—all of which he learned during the Building Heroes course.
"The course helped me gain the skills required for my current job. I wouldn’t have been able to secure this role without it, as relevant construction skills were a key requirement. Everything I learned on the course—plumbing, bricklaying, and more—I now apply daily in my work at Landmarc."
Through Building Heroes, Stephen successfully transitioned into a civilian role that directly benefits from his military background and new skill development, providing him with new career opportunities and a successful resettlement.
