Chris Grubb: From Service to Self Employed

Chris served 22 years in the Army leaving the Defence School of Transport in July 2021.

From Service to Self-Employment: Chris’s Story

For Chris, joining Building Heroes was about more than just retraining, it was about returning to something he had always felt drawn to.

After spending two years in the construction industry early in his career, Chris made the decision to join the Army. But the interest in construction never left him.

“I think it was unfinished business for me. I had always been interested in construction, and Building Heroes gave me the opportunity to come back to it.”

After completing his full military service, Chris began exploring his next steps and discovered Building Heroes, a decision that would prove to be a turning point.

Building Confidence Through Skills and Support

Like many service leavers, transitioning into civilian life came with uncertainty. For Chris, one of the most valuable aspects of the programme was the opportunity to learn from experienced instructors and gain a real understanding of working in the civilian sector.

“The best thing for me was being trained and mentored by experienced instructors. Being able to ask questions and learn what it’s really like on civvy street made a huge difference.”

Through hands-on training and exposure to multiple trades, Chris quickly recognised how transferable his military experience was.

“Building Heroes made me realise straight away that the military and construction go hand in hand, discipline, hard work, integrity, loyalty and communication.”

The programme not only built his technical skills but also gave him the confidence to explore different pathways and make informed decisions about his future.

“It was about practice, practice, practice. That’s what gave me the confidence. I was able to try different trades and figure out what I really enjoyed.”

Creating Impact Through Opportunity

Chris’s journey reflects the wider impact of Building Heroes programmes. To date, we have supported over 4,300 learners from the Armed Forces community, with a 99% completion rate and 68% progressing into positive outcomes including employment, self-employment and further training.

Finding Direction and Starting a Business

With growing confidence and a clearer sense of direction, Chris began to take his first steps into self-employment.

Support from instructors and fellow learners helped him navigate the early stages of setting up his own business, from practical skills to advice on marketing and finances.

“I got great advice on setting up my business page and understanding the basics of running a small business. That support really helped me get started.”

Alongside building his business, Chris also took on a part time role as a maintenance manager in a residential home, gaining valuable experience while providing financial stability.

“That role helped me develop my skills even further and gave me the stability to grow my business at the same time.”

A Career with Purpose

Today, Chris is building a career that not only reflects his skills, but also his values.

Balancing his own business with his role in the residential home, he has found a path that is both professionally and personally rewarding.

“I feel like my life is being fulfilled doing work I’m genuinely passionate about.”

His work in the residential home has been particularly meaningful, combining his trade skills with a caring role supporting adults with learning difficulties.

“It’s such a rewarding job. Not just the maintenance side, but being able to help and brighten someone’s day.”

A Moment to Remember

One of Chris’s proudest moments came when he volunteered on BBC DIY SOS, helping to build a new youth centre in Beverley, his place of birth.

“I’ve watched DIY SOS since it first aired, so to be part of a Big Build in my hometown was something really special.”

Working alongside hundreds of volunteers, Chris contributed to every stage of the build, from groundwork to decorating, in what he describes as an unforgettable experience.

“We came there as strangers, and left with 400 friends for life. The atmosphere was incredible, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Looking Ahead

Chris’s journey is still evolving. His business continues to grow, supported by an expanding customer base and strong local network. He is also considering future opportunities to develop both his business and his role within the residential home.

“The experience I’ve gained over the last few years has opened up so many opportunities.”

He is also proud to continue giving back, offering support and discounts to fellow veterans and members of his community.

Advice to Others

For those considering their next step after service, Chris has a simple message:

“Building Heroes gives you a real taste of the different trades and helps you figure out what’s right for you. The advice and support you get is priceless.”

Chris’s story is a powerful example of what can be achieved with the right support, combining skills, confidence and opportunity to create a fulfilling and sustainable future beyond service.
